 Porcelain Veneers - Inlays/Onlays

Porcelain Veneers

Veneers may be an option for patients:  unhappy with the shape of their teeth, with chipped or cracked teeth, with deep stains, and/or open spaces present.

Porcelain veneers are thin shields that are bonded to the front of the tooth surface.   They can increase strength and resistance to cracking and staining while retaining the appearance of natural tooth structure.

Porcelain veneers are much stronger and more durable than plastic composite bonding.  Sometimes composites will stain or shrink with age.   Veneers on the other hand, retain their beautiful luster and vitality for years.

Inlays/Onlays

An Inlay is similar to a filling.   The tooth is prepared in the same way, an existing filling or the decay is removed, and then an impression is taken and given to our lab.   the lab then fabricates a porcelain or gold restoration to be placed back into the tooth.   This requires two appointments.

Inlays are conservative.   Generally much less tooth structure is removed in preparation of inlays than a crown and they are more durable and far-outlast fillings.

Onlays are essentially identical to inlays with the exception of a larger portion of the tooth is now involved, cusps have been included in the preparation.   They are composed of the same materials as inlays -  composite resins, porcelain or gold.   They are sometimes referred to as partial crowns.

Considerations:

Depending on the size and location, fillings can reduce the strength of a tooth.  Inlays and Onlays, on the other hand, can actually increase the strength of the tooth up to
75%.  Because the restoration is made outside of the mouth, it can be made much stronger.  They typically last between 10 to 30 years.
