Star White, Star Bright: How to Add Hollywood Glam to Your Grin

Star White, Star Bright: How to Add Hollywood Glam to Your Grin

Forget cars, couture and Chihuahuas, the new must-have accessory is a set of gleaming, pearly-white teeth. One of the easiest ways to improve your overall appearance, tooth whitening has rapidly become the hottest new makeover trick. Because white teeth are commonly associated with youth, health and Hollywood, it's no surprise that the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry reports that the number of whitening procedures has increased more than 300 percent in the last five years.

"It was a shock at the beginning," says Dr. Nicholas Davis, dentist and president-elect of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. "But everybody has grown accustomed to it now and that's what they want. My patients come to me and say, 'I want the whitest teeth you've ever given anybody.' "

To be sure, it’s no secret that celebrities shell out the big bucks to attain their red-carpet smiles. Just take a look at Tara Reid, Bon Jovi or even Regis Philbin. Their blindingly bright smiles should come with a warning label for your retinas.

How white is too white? Dentists typically use a 16-shade guide that sets the standard for whiteness, wherein most professional treatments can bring teeth up to the top 2 percent. However, as a general rule, teeth should never be whiter than the whites of your eyes—or look like giant Chiclets..........

A smile can be the most eye-catching feature of your face. Even a subtle change
can make a big difference in the way you look and feel. We can repair chipped, broken or missing teeth with tooth-colored restorations! We can make yellow or gray teeth whiter with professional bleaching and can replace the darker silver fillings!

There are many factors that affect the quality of cosmetic dentistry. For example, the bonding materials we use in a single white filling are the best on the market.  It is common to see patients who have had two, three or even four separate fillings, performed at different times, and placed within the same tooth! 'Patchwork' dentistry is not done in our office because decay is usually present under these older, adjacent fillings.

It is silly, though less costly, to attach a new filling to an older, decaying one. When we place bonded fillings in a tooth we will usually remove old, adjacent fillings within that same tooth at the same time. This takes more of our time, but being thorough now will save you from needing more work later.

The caps we make in this office do not show any metal. It is common to see caps made elsewhere that show dark metal on the biting or inside surface. Our lab technicians hand craft beautiful, well fitting caps.

The skill in preparation and impression-making of your teeth for caps is significant. Accuracy is important to tolerances less than 0.001 of a millimeter! In addition to creating cosmetically beautiful caps we also create them to minimize long-term gum problems (overly bulky caps irritate gums) and maximize cement retention (so the cap won't fall out). Ask and we'll show you how!  All these factors allow us to create caps that look great and can last a long time.
